First and foremost, this project could not have happened without the generous support of Furman University (Greenville, SC) and the Furman Fellowship.
"The Furman Fellowship is an endowed scholarship fund founded in 2004 with a gift from Trustee Emeritus Robert H. Buckman and his wife, Joyce Mollerup."
All of the research and information contained in this website stems from a project that I proposed to generate clean energy in communities with limited access to electricity by attaching small-scale generators to the bicycles. My initial thesis was that “A charged battery can be removed from the device at the end of the day to power a lamp or cooktop in the home, and suddenly bikes are serving the dual purpose of mobility and clean electricity production.”
As the old adage goes, things are never as easy as they seem. Rather than trying to commercialize a complex product, I pivoted to focus on sharing the lessons I learned with other aspiring engineers. While I may not be able to impact communities on the other side of the globe, my hope is that this project inspires someone in my local community to embrace their creativity and translate ideas into tangible learning experiences.
In the meantime, check out Renewable World to support global access to clean energy.
